Wow! Eric Church
Segment #900
Eric Church (@ericchurch) delivers the commencement address at North Carolina Chapel Hill.
Country music superstar and devoted Tar Heel fan Eric Church delivered a unique and widely praised commencement address to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Class of 2026 on May 9, 2026, at Kenan Stadium.
Church eschewed a traditional podium speech, instead using his acoustic guitar to present his own version of "string theory," where each of the guitar's six strings represented a fundamental life principle.
On May 9, 2026 Eric delivered a moving commencement speech for the graduating class of UNC Chapel Hill, structured around the 6 strings of a guitar. Each string, or pillar, represents Faith, Family, Love and Partnership, Ambition vs Resilience, Community, and Individuality. He closed it out with a special performance of his song "Carolina".
The Six Strings of Life
Church used the metaphor to explain that while life will inevitably knock these strings out of tune, the "difference between a life that sounds like music and a life that sounds like noise" is the willingness to listen and make adjustments.
StringLife PrincipleKey WisdomLow EFaithThe foundation that holds the universe together when science shrugs.
A StringFamilyThe "body" of the chord; those who love you when you aren't easy to love
D StringPartner/SpouseThe heart of the instrument and the most important decision outside of faith.
G StringAmbition & ResilienceThe tension between wanting things and getting back up when you fail.
B StringCommunityResisting the urge to be "globally visible and locally invisible.
"High EIndividualityYour unique gift; Church warned not to let anyone else "re-tune" your string.
