Real ID Act - TSA

Segment # 404

At U.S. airports, your photo may be taken when presenting your ID at TSA checkpoints if the airport uses facial recognition technology. This process is part of TSA's identity verification system, which matches the photo taken at the checkpoint to the image on your ID (e.g., REAL ID or passport) to confirm your identity. However, participation in this system is optional, and travelers can opt out of having their photo taken in favor of manual ID verification by a TSA officer25.

Key Points:

  • Facial Recognition Technology: TSA uses second-generation Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2) scanners at select airports to verify identity through facial recognition. Photos taken during this process are not stored or saved after the match is completed, except in limited testing environments5.

  • Opting Out: Travelers who prefer not to use facial recognition can decline the photo and request manual ID verification without losing their place in line or facing delays25.

  • Privacy Protections: TSA has implemented safeguards to ensure traveler privacy, including signage that informs passengers of their right to opt out and rigorous standards for the technology's use5.

This system is designed to improve security and efficiency but remains voluntary for travelers who are concerned about privacy.

My issues with unchecked authority make me balk a bit at this upgrade.Who is really going to be aware of their rights in opting in or opting out. Another slowdown in the TSA checkin procedure.

Clearly our government is not very good at handling power. Security becomes a circular argument with the Dems ignoring the realities of an open border and the Republicans then being forced to address the logical and subsequent dangers in not knowing who is in the country. Regardless after May, flying will be more of a hassle. Most people have compliant IDs. Those that don’t will really slow things down

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is implementing new identification requirements as part of the REAL ID Act, which will take full effect on May 7, 2025. This system aims to enhance the security of domestic air travel by requiring passengers aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant identification or an alternative acceptable form of ID to board commercial flights within the United States.

Key Details About the New ID System:

  1. REAL ID-Compliant Identification:

    • A REAL ID is typically marked with a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of state-issued driver’s licenses or ID cards.

    • Enhanced driver’s licenses, often marked with a flag, are also acceptable.

    • Passengers without a REAL ID will need to provide another form of acceptable identification, such as a passport, Global Entry card, or military ID123.

  2. Enforcement at TSA Checkpoints:

    • Starting May 7, 2025, TSA will no longer accept non-compliant state-issued IDs at security checkpoints.

    • Travelers presenting non-compliant IDs will face additional screening measures and potential delays. In some cases, they may be denied access to the security checkpoint if no alternative ID is provided12.

  3. Purpose of REAL ID:

    • The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued IDs and reduce the risk of fraudulent identification.

    • It was a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission to improve national security2.

  4. How to Obtain a REAL ID:

    • To get a REAL ID-compliant credential, individuals must apply in person at their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency.

    • Applicants need to provide federally required documents proving identity, date of birth, Social Security number, residency (two proofs), and lawful status in the U.S.2.

  5. Digital and Touchless Options:

    • TSA is also exploring digital identity solutions and touchless verification systems for PreCheck® members and other travelers. These technologies aim to streamline the identity verification process at checkpoints59.

Travelers are strongly encouraged to verify their current IDs for compliance and make necessary updates well before the enforcement date to avoid disruptions
