Policing the Internet in Europe
This piece on 60 Minutes would probably freak out most Americans who value Free Speech. While it is utopia to want everyone to be nice and not say anything hateful, the power to unilaterally enforce and define these limits is not something our species have proven capable of handling. I choose Elon who is now fighting the courts in Europe over X and the limits they want to impose.
European leaders are not happy with JD Vance’s speech in Munich and are meeting today in Paris to decide how to deal with Trump. It will be fascinating to see what comes of this. Europe better be careful. The US has been subsidizing these countries for decades with trade deficits and unfair tarifs in their markets. Be interesting how the Germans argue their penalties on US companies.
Chevrolet into Germany: Vehicles imported into Germany from outside the EU, such as a Chevrolet from the U.S., are subject to a 10% import duty and an additional 19% value-added tax (VAT), making the total effective cost increase 29% of the vehicle’s value4.
Mercedes-Benz into the U.S.: Vehicles imported from Germany into the U.S., such as a Mercedes-Benz, face a much lower 2.5% import tariff. There is no additional VAT applied in the U.S., unlike in Europe6.
